The Purple Gallinule  also called "swamp hen" is a beautiful colored bird of southern and tropical wetlands, he can be see walking on top of floating vegetation or clambering through dense shrubs. Its extremely long toes help it walk on lily pads without sinking.

Purple Gallinules are know to eat a variety of both plants and animals so they are categorized as omnivores. They eat seeds, leaves and fruits both in the water and on land and have also been know to eat insects, frogs, snails, spiders, earthworms and fish. Sometimes Purple Gallinules will even eat eggs and chicks of other species of birds.
