BELARUS ~ Struve Geodetic Arc - UNESCO ~

...Country nr4 showing a Geodetic Arc...most of the  Arc’s points (19) are located in Belarus (historians say that there were 31 stone cubes on the territory of the country), five of them are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List....Thanks a lot Alexandra!!

It was built on the initiative of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve (on postcard) between 1810 and 1865 and should measure the size and the shape of the earth and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping.

The Arc is 2820 km long and is a exceptional example for the cooperation of scientists and monarchs of different countries for a scientific aim.

Since 2005 the Struve Geodetic Arc is a transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site in Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine.

The points are marked by drilled holes, cross marks in stone, carved crosses or cairns.
