...An envelope full with great philatelic items... this is probably one of the last sent envelopes with a "Norfolk" cancellation from this "paradise" island in the Pacific Ocean... at the end of June the island will lose its independent status as a self-governing Australian territory...Australia Post (July 1) will begin to release stamps inscribed Norfolk Island Australia...Thanks so much Leonie for these great unique postcards and I wish you and all the people of your beautiful island all the best for the future!! ♥‿♥
Captain James Cook was the first known European to discover Norfolk Island. He discovered this uninhabited paradise in 1774 during his second voyage around the world aboard HMS Resolution.
On March 6, 1788, the British colours were raised over Norfolk Island. But by 1814 the island was empty.
Foundation Day is celebrated in March to commemorate the day on which Lt. Philip Gidley King arrived on the island in 1788, establishing the very first European settlement there.
During Norfolk’s second penal settlement (1825 – 1856) it was used as a punishment destination for the most hardened of criminals and conditions on Norfolk were extremely harsh.

Norfolk Island is a tiny 8kmx5km island in the South Pacific Ocean, defined by Pine trees and jagged cliffs, located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. Its capital is Kingston even though Burnt Pine is the commercial hub of the island.
