From backside card:
An island overrun:A kipuka is an island of forest surrounded by lava, saved from volcano deity Pele's (goddess of volcanoes) embrace-for the time being. But yesterday's kipuka may become tomorrow's lava field. Here, the cinder cone Pu`u `O`o on Kilauea Volcano erupts a fountain that feeds the river of lava in the foreground. That clinkery type of lava rock is called ʻaʻā. The skeletal ohi'a trees being overun were already killed by the heat of previous flow.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, is  located on the island of Hawaii. It encompasses two active volcanoes: Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa, the world's most massive subaerial volcano. The park gives scientists insight into the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and ongoing studies into the processes of vulcanism.
