Dambulla Cave Temple is a monastery and sacred pilgrim site for 22 centuries located in the central part of the island. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka.It mainly consists of five cave temples, which contain statues and wall paintings of Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses.

The work of The Golden Buddha (made of concrete & bricks and gold-plated) in Dharma Chakra Mudra posture started in 1998 and was completed in 2001. The statue is located on top of a 3 storey building that houses the museum and ticket counter.

Dambulla cave temple also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a UNESCO WHS since 1991.
